Explore The Smugglers Trail

Picture

Gunsgreen is the house that smuggling built, but the secrets and stories were not just within this ‘Smuggler’s Palace’.  Smugglers were active right up and down the Berwickshire coast.

History brought to life

As a result of research conducted by our historian/curator Derek Janes, We have now developed The Smugglers’ Trail. We now know a lot about incidents that took place along this coastline that really represent how rife smuggling was in this part of Scotland.

Watch the film

Hear the key people involved explain some of the stories and plans for the trail’s interpretation. This film was made possible by funding from the University of Exeter.

New Interpretation

In order to display these stories to the public, over the next year or so, we will be developing ‘The Smugglers’ Trail’ along the Berwickshire Coastal Path.  The route will have interpretation of smuggling stories along the way, and will stop you at various viewpoints where known incidents took place. Gunsgreen House will be at the centre of this trail, and our displays have been upgraded to show more of the Smugglers’ Trail stories.
